Pipiriki House Year Built: Bought in 1901, extended in 1902, second built in 1909. Type: Hotel. Use: A stop over for long up-river trips and as a holiday destination. Fate: On March 10th 1909 the first Pipiriki House burnt to the ground, the following day Hatrick had arranged plans for a new hotel and also organised for PS Manuwai be fitted with sides and be converted to a houseboat. When this was completed she was taken up to Pipiriki and moored on the lower wharf. The new house was completed in 1910 and the Manuwai returned to her normal job. The second Hotel burnt down in 1959 and was never replaced. In the 1990's Pipiriki locals started to build a modern relacement on the site of the previous Pipiriki Houses, but this was never finished and still stands largely complete. |
