Moored at it's wharf, it heeled over, filled with water and sank in 1952. It's superstructure was then removed, but the hull left the fill with mud. In 1990 the Whanganui Riverboat Restoration & Navigation Trust was formed to salvage the Waimarie and restore her as a tourist attraction. Dug out of the mud in 1993 and re-launched in 1999, Waimarie made her maiden voyage at mid-night on January 1st 2000 and with a replica boiler and original engines, she now operates regular scheduled cruises. |
