Introduction: In 1900 a company called The Wanganui Up-River Settlers Co. was formed in opposition to A. Hatrick & Co. They launched their steamer P.S. Aotea and began the up-hill struggle until 1902 when the company was forced to liquidate. The Aotea was sold to A. Hatrick & Co. and was re-named Waimarie, meaning 'Good Fortune'.

Fate: In July 1949 after a long, hard career the Waimarie was taken out of service when it's boiler wore out. Moored at it's wharf, it heeled over, filled with water and sank in 1952. It's superstructure was then removed, but the hull left the fill with mud. In 1990 the Whanganui Riverboat Restoration & Navigation Trust was formed to salvage the Waimarie and restore her as a tourist attraction. Dug out of the mud in 1993 and re-launched in 1999, Waimarie made her maiden voyage at mid-night on January 1st 2000 and with a replica boiler and original engines, she now operates regular scheduled cruises.
